Ex 1: Personal Goals

Ex 1A: Personal Goals (250 words; informal personal essay, including a quote from Setonian editor-in-chief Stormy Knight) 25pts

Update, 26 August: Submit this essay to Turnitin.com. I'll send out an e-mail in a few days with instructions.

More details follow.

Prompts

Please don't feel obligated to answer every one of these prompts, and please do not answer each one in the order in which I ask them.

Use these prompts to help you plan an informal one-page statement (250 words) that articulates your goals for this course.

Feel free to write in the first person and/or make use of bulleted lists.

If you are new to EL200:
  • Include, in your goals statement, a quotation from Stormy Knight, editor-in-chief of The Setonian.  (You may reach her at setonian@setonhill.edu. She has agreed to participate in this exercise, but she's just as busy as you are, so please respect her time. Formulate some specific questions for her to answer, ask her whether she'd rather talk to you over the phone, meet with you, or just respond by e-mail. Please don't hit her at the last minute with "I need a quote for my homework.")
  • Questions for you to ponder about yourself:
    • What is your understanding of "new media journalism"?
    • What strengths do you bring to a new media journalism program?
    • What opportunities for growth do you expect to find in this course?

If you have taken EL200 before:
  • I would welcome a quote from Stormy, but for you it's optional.
  • Questions for you to ponder:
    • How will you use the lab reports, reflection assignments, and production labs most effectively?
    • How will you take advantage of another semester's worth of opportunities to challenge yourself, with an aim towards keeping your experience as a student-journalist fresh and relevant?
    • How can we work together to make this course relevant to the "new media" component of the program?
    • How can we work together to make this course relevant to the "journalism" component of the program?

Does this assignment need uploaded to turnitin.com? Just curious. Also, we do not have class on this day, right?
PS, I also wanted to be the first person to write something on the course website.

Gaah, I can't believe I forgot about Labor Day. Thanks for the question, Jeremy.

Of course you're right, there's no class on Sep 1. I'll rearrange things on the course website.

I'll send out an e-mail in a few days with instructions for uploading the essay to Turnitin.com, and (for the new students) how to post your reading responses to your SHU weblog.

Could we please have the class ID and enrollment password soon? I'm leaving for Labor Day weekend and won't have access to the Internet. I'd like to post it before Friday. Thank you.

Dani, I did send out the Turnitin.com ID and password -- those were the only additional instructions. Do you need those?

Daniella Choynowski said:

no, I have everything. I emailed Stormy yesterday for a quote, but I don't know if she'll get back to me in time
