A Blending of Literary Schools Creates One Convincing Claim
“That is why I insist on calling it a mystery story—for it is a detective story where the reader on reading and, crucially, rereading the story has to learn not only to be the detective who could have solved the crime, but to decide what the crime was and who the real criminal is” (Swann 311).

Tim Gunn says MAKE IT WORK!!!

'Benito Cereno' may look very like a detective story with Delano as a Watson minus Holmes, but, of course, Melville is an artist and "Benito Cereno" is literature; therefore, it is much better than any mere detective story could be.

"The mystery/detective story, involving as it does so clearly questions of crime and punishment, confronts questions of authority in society" (Swann 317).

Katie Vann said:

"The function, then, of this myster story is to enable us to read this sentence -- to re-read the whole story in order to set it in the right, hidden narrative. All through 'Benito Cereno' sentences change their meanings on re-reading" (Swann 324).
