Blondes ‘to die out in 200 years’

“The last natural blondes will die out within 200 years, scientists believe. A study by experts in Germany suggests people with blonde hair are an endangered species and will become extinct by 2202.” —Blondes ‘to die out in 200 years’ (BBC)

Two comments. First, this reminds me of the game theory scene in A Beautiful Mind, where four male mathematicians scheming for the attention of a blonde all agree to ignore her in favor of her four brunette friends, reducing the chances that any man will be rejected. Second, this article is needlessly alarmist; blonde genes are recessive. People with blonde genes aren’t having as many blonde children, because they’re now more likely to have children with people outside the Scandinavian communities where blonde genes are so prevalent. The story gets your attention because it seems to be claiming that all blonde people will fall to the ground and die by the year 2202.

  1. What about the possibility of having sistained heritage?
    Stick with the arithmetic.

A little after the fact but more concrete makes it heavier!

  2. This story was yet another example of what might have been a hoax being taken for real. At best, it shows how easy it is for sloppy reporting to spread. Later reports cited the World Health Organization as saying it had nothing to do with the claims about blonds. So it looks like the claim was unscientific in the first place.

  3. I find the logic above faulty. If, as ‘anonymous’ claims, blondes are attractive to all males surely they would be in danger of becoming extinct rather than the other way around.
Also just because the girl in the article is attractive does’nt follow that her descendants will not become extinct. Beauty (and she is very beautiful, by the way) is no shield to extinction.
I think ‘anonymous’ is getting carried away by his feelings, obviously he likes blondes a lot.

  4. I don’t believe blondes will die out by 2202, it will be a lot longer than that. You can’t have too much of a good thing! Blondes from Scandanavian countries are attractive to all males, so it stands to reason that people with blonde genes will mate with their blonde partners – granted that non-blondes males will want to do so too!
Two other thoughts: the article claims that Finland has the highest number of blondes, I always thought it was Sweden that had more white women with that hair colour.
Finally the girl pictured in the article is certainly attractive and very blonde. How can her descendants become extinct!!
