Do you see it too? That’s one weird warping effect…

I just downloaded The Gimp, a free, open-source replacement for Photoshop.

I can probably kiss the next couple of hours goodbye… this looks like fun.

  1. Jess, thanks for the technical explanation.

Josh, you’re right, The Gimp’s website covers its origins pretty thoroughly. It still feels like a Mac application to me, though. But I jumped to a conclusion.

  2. Actually, GIMP was designed by unix/linux geeks :) No Macs were harmed in the making of this software…

It was designed to run under Linux 1.2.13, Solaris 2.4, HPUX 9.05, SGI IRIX, but was restricted by the requirement for Motif… Check out the history and development on their homepage: http://www.gimp.org/about/

I’ve been using this for about 5 years (to convert stored images to postscript and embed them in LaTeX files for papers) and it is definitely more engine than I need…

  3. I took down the NMJ blogroll because it was organized by course, and that doesn’t really make much sense over the summer.

The Gimp is very powerful — more powerful than it needs to be in order to do what I need. The various other free utilities like Microsoft’s Paint and Google’s Picasa are useful enough in some ways, and I do have a fairly decent commercial product installed on my computer at work. But I’m in summertime daddy mode, which means that I won’t be going into the office much. So The Gimp is very helpful.

Yes, the free -floating tool windows are distracting. Obviously The Gimp was designed by Mac users. I wish there were an option to make it look more like th tools I’m used to, but hey, it’s free, so I can’t really complain.

  4. That’s all right. There’s always next semester.
What do you think of the GIMP thus far? I have it downloaded on my computer and it’s nice, but the fact that the taskpanes don’t dock to the main window bothers me somehow. Anyway, is there a list of new bloggers out? I noticed NMJ did not have it’s community blogroll.

  5. I think it’s a cool illusion… it has to do with the way the eye perceives the colors read and blue.

Unfortunately, I don’t think there is much work-study made available over the summer… I didn’t request any for The Setonian.

  6. Now, now, Dr. Jerz, that’s just an optical illusion. If you want, I can get Jess to change the font… :’) If you still have Setonian work-study hours over the summer, I wouldn’t mind working them. I need work, in fact. I’m going broke!

  7. Thanks for the tip. For some reason, I was briefly gripped by the urge to redo my whole website with a steampunk theme, but fortunately I got tired last night before I started that project, and now that I’m rested it doesn’t seem quite as pressing.

    Still, I do love retrotechnology…

  8. My geek quotient is reasonably low, but I still think the Gimp is a fantastic piece of software. Have some fun with the logos. My kids at school love cooltext.com and flamingtext.com which both use the Gimp under the hood.
I have used http://gug.sunsite.dk/ as a resource for Gimp scripts and textures. It’s worth a look!
