Stephens: Timeline, Intro, and Chapter 1

I won't usually give you a list of questions to answer, but since we won't have class next week, I thought I should give you a bit of direction in your reading.

Timeline

Just scan it. You won't have to memorize any of the dates, but do look for these details.

What was the name of the first newspaper printed west of the Allegheny Mountains?
Why was the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor "a radio story"?
When was the word "anchor" first used in broadcast journalism, and in what context?
Where and when did the first commercial radio station start broadcasting?
Why did the early American newspapers carry little local news?
Where and when was paper invented?

Introduction

What does it mean to say that the news is a "commodity"?
Why does Stephens bring up the 1994 O.J. Simpson freeway chase? How does it apply to your own understanding of journalism?

Chapter 1

Respond to one of the boxes in the chapter. Choose a specific detail that changed your understanding of journalism, and explain its significance.
Answer one of the questions on page 15.
