blogs.setonhill.edu is down

I’ve notified the server admin, who says he’ll won’t be able to look at it until early this evening.

A shout out to Rachel Crump, who was just about to give an oral presentation on Dungeons & Dragons when the blogs went down at about 3:45 … she had prepared thoroughly enough that she did a smashing job anyway, but what a nightmare!

I always bring a plain paper version of my talk, since I’ve seen plenty of presenters who were depending on technology crash and burn.

  1. Believe me, I’ve been extremely troubled by the timing… as far as the deadline goes, obviously you can’t work on the project while the site is down, so I do plan to be flexible. As soon as I know more, I’ll post it here. I last heard from the sysadmin at about 10am today.

  2. Just heard from Dave, the sysadmin: “The server is fine and your data is fine.” Apparently some problem with the ISP (that is, the connection between the server and the rest of the Internet).

  3. Nope, this isn’t the planned server move. I got a brief message from the sysadmin around 5pm today, and have heard nothing since. I just sent a polite query a few moments ago.

  4. From the sysadmin:

    Dennis,
I harrassed the hell out of my ISP and finally got them to fix things.
You’re back on. Sorry for the downtime.
    David

    Total Downtime: about 20 hours.
I’ll extend the deadline for EL 267 to any time on Friday.

  5. Dennis, Yes, I know how it feels when technology crashes and burns. It happened to me in San Antonio. I was told an LCD projector would be available for me, so I took my article, and condensed PowerPoint. I learned disgustedly that LCD projectors were available for $550 per day (broke college students carry that in their back pocket), became flustered, and watched my presentation *bleep!*
