Paper Dolls and Politics

My six-year-old daughter is in the next room, playing with her hand-made paper dolls.

A few minutes ago, I heard her tones get a little deeper, and as I listened, I heard, “I’m Barack Obama, and I approve this message.”

Then I heard the rustle of another paper doll, and my daughter said, again in a deep voice, “Well, I’m John McCain, and here’s why you should vote for me.”

As near as I could figure it, the political differences between the Obama and McCain platforms hinge on birthday parties, the alphabet, the answer to five plus zero, and the dubious value of cooked carrots.

  1. My children will TOTALLY play with paper dolls of the presidential candidates. If I can figure out how to make cut-out versions of senators and Supreme Court justices they’ll have those too.

  2. I went in and changed the angle brackets to square brackets…
Carolyn was all ready to be a gelfling (from the 80s Jim Henson movie The Dark Crystal, which I had never seen before), but then she saw the SHU dance team do “Thriller” last week and now she wants to be a zombie. Peter recently got a new light-up light sabre, so he’ll probably be Darth Vader or Emperor Palpatine.

  3. Drat… your blog filtered out some funny directorial bits I stupidly put into brackets like “extreme close-up on glint of scissors” and “cue Psycho soundtrack here” Ah well, my Halloween message still stands: have a good one! What will the kids be dressing up as this year?

  4. I know your daughter is a sweetheart, but when I picture this scene you’ve described, it plays out in my head like the opening prologue to a movie about a presidential assassin. [Cut to extreme close-up on the glinting edge of those scissors!] “HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR ME!” [Cue shower scene bird tweeting from Psycho musical score].
    Happy Election Season-slash-Halloween!
    ;-)

  5. I love it. You know, I haven’t really heard what either candidate has to say about the answer to five plus zero or cooked carrots. That concerns me a little.
