March 2008 Archives

The focus this term is "community journalism, with an emphasis on Greensburg."

For Ex 3, submit an article that would be appropriate for a July 11 issue of the Summer Setonian, a special issue that will be distributed on campus and read (probably more thoroughly than usual) by an audience that includes prospective students and their parents.

Fewer undergraduate students are on campus over the summer, so the usual SHU audience will skew a bit more towards staff and grad students.

A secondary audience is potential advertisers.

Due today: (On paper) A printout that indicates

  • Your topic and angle
  • Why your story is especially appropriate for the special audience of the Summer Setonian
  • Sources you have interviewed
  • Sources you have appointments with
  • Sources you have contacted
  • Sources you have not yet contacted
  • An idea for your sidebar
I do not recommend that you blog about your in-progress journalism, unless you can publish self-contained units like a Q & A transcript or spot news about events that relate to your subject.

Assigned Text:

Current Event

  1. Choose any current news article that is relevant to this semester's focus on local news and community journalism.
  2. Analyze it briefly in a blog entry, examining how The Setonian can benefit from the journalistic practices exhibited by your example.
Due Today:

Portfolio 2

  1. The usual 400-word article, with three sources, describing your contributions to The Setonian.
  2. A plan (with your own deadlines) for your term project.
  3. This fall I plan to make coverage of the presidential election the theme for EL200.  I'd like to know... what election-related assignment or project do you think would make a good match for EL200? Be creative but realistic.
