One of the popular games from 1993: Doom (play online re-creation of Doom, which lacks the original music; then watch this video, which includes the music, but lacks the interaction.
Doom was marketed as shareware; people were encouraged to distribute the game for free and pay what they felt the game was worth; level-editors built up the fan base, and sequels got the fans to pay up. A wildly successful company.
