WB 4: Review and Active/Passive Verbs
Workbook 4 may be found in J-Web. There is nothing to submit to Turnitin.com for this workbook.
WB4 is a chance for you to review what we have learned so far. I am also introducing active and passive verbs. (See a handout and slideshow.)

Work book four used the story that we wrote about for Friday's assignment and used more words (1,200)to expand the story. I feel that being able to use more words would have made the assignment less complicated. Being able to only use 400 words restricted myself a bit. It gave me less leeway and more use of my imagination. In the professsional world of Jopurnalism, I would assume that assignments are dictated and vague. The reporter would have to use his knowledge of what they were taught in order to come up with a story.
That's right, Jeremy. If a story ever turns out to be bigger than your editor thought it was when he or she assigned you a word count, you can always explain why you think the story would be better if it were longer. But it is good practice to figure out exactly what you could accomplish in 400 words, since you had to throw away quite a lot of material that didn't make the cut.
So, uh, what part of this workbook is due by 5pm on Monday?
Both parts.
Haha sorry Dr. Jerz, that was a dumb question. I was looking in the wrong section of Jweb (under handouts) and didn't see anything I needed to complete. Thanks though.
There are no dumb questions... Thanks for letting me know you figured it out.
Ah, new problem (I'm such a pain!). I accidently closed the window for wkbook 1 without completing anything. Can I restart it somehow?
Do you mean Workbook 4 Part 1? I do have the ability to reset it for you... let me know that you do want me to reset Part 1 of WB 4 and I will do it for you (I'll try to check my e-mail again before I get to bed but it might be until I get into work tomorrow).
Yes, Part 1 of Wkbook 4 please. Thank you!
I feel that the 1200 word professional essay was a bit wordy. Although he used much detail, I feel this article practically made a childrens book. If I were an avid news paper reader I would have not been bored, but been ok with not having to read all the extreme details he added for example about her digging through the trash. Yes, it gives you better picture in your head, but when your just trying to get the news you don't really need the visual. And in response to Jeremy, yes being able to use more words does make it easier to write the story. When you have room to add all the detail you want, but being able to write the same story just as good with 400 words is the skill.
