Ex 1-1A: English and I

A diagnostic essay (about 500 words). Focus on one specific event that illustrates a specific point about your personal relationship with English, for the benefit of the reader. Submit it by uploading it to Turnitin.com. (I will e-mail instructions for signing up.)

  • You can write about anything at all that has to do with English and you -- it doesn't have to relate to the other reading that's due today.
  • All I ask is that you stick to one good topic, rather than list a bunch of things that compete with each other for the reader's attention.

Feel free to write in a personal voice, but note that an essay should have a shape -- with a beginning that raises a non-obvious point, a middle that builds a case for that point, and a conclusion that moves beyond "Therefore, in this paper I have [repeat introduction here]."

Your textbooks for Basic Comp and/or Seminar in Thinking and Writing will have useful information on how to write a personal essay.

For a recent job offer that I accepted I was asked to put my english skills to work. I was asked to prepare op-sheets for each and every job that was offered at this company. I was new to the company. For me to sit down and write a job description for all fifty employees, was more than I was ready for. I barely knew what my job involved. Everyday, I went to spend the day with a different person so that I could learn what their job involved. I would spend the day with the worker then put their experiences on paper. I worked with each and every person until I had finished writing an op-sheet for all the areas of employment. After I finished the rough draft of the op-sheet I met with my boss to see what ideas he might have before I finished the completed version. He wanted a complete job description for all of his employees. As I met with him and revised my op-sheet to make him more comfortable, I realized that I had learned alot about the business by working one on one with the employees. We worked togtther for a couple of weeks until I finally finished the op-sheets. At the end of the two weeks I prepared a complete set of op-sheets for each and every job on the site. This would make it alot easier for a new hire to be brought into the company. Now, on the first day that they started at Rich Farms we would have an op-sheet to hand them on what their tasks involved. This would make life alot easier for everyone.

Wow, Marsha, that's quite an accomplishment that really puts your skills to the test.

Dr. Jerz-
I don't know if you wanted it there or not - but I posted this on my blog as well.

Chelsea, you are always welcome to post anything you feel comfortable sharing, but I also want students to have the opportunity to write just for me, if they choose to write about things they're not ready to share with the world. (I really liked your essay, Chelsea... thanks for sharing it!)
