Very glad to see another of August Wilson’s plays is getting filmed. Sad to read that it won’t be filed in Pittsburgh, where Wilson grew up and where most of his plays take place.
“The entire film industry of Southwest Pennsylvania is saddened to not be able to welcome August Wilson’s ‘Piano Lesson’ to Pittsburgh, as we have with the other two projects in the ‘Pittsburgh Cycle,’” Keezer told the Post-Gazette. She was under the impression that the main reason “The Piano Lesson” opted to film elsewhere was due to Pennsylvania’s film tax credit program, which provides studios with a rebate based on how much money they spend in the commonwealth. Pennsylvania’s film tax credit used to be capped at $70 million a fiscal year before state legislators expanded it to $100 million effective June of last year. —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
