August 30, 2010 Archives

I suggest you schedule about 90 minutes for this assignment.

Download the full instructions for Ex 1: EL200 Journalism Basics.doc
  • Part A: Personal Goals Statement. (50%)
  • Part B: News Basics Worksheet. (50%)
Upload both parts, in a single document, to the proper slot in Turnitin.com, by 12:30pm, Sep 30.

Using Turnitin.com

You'll need a free account on www.turnitin.com in order to submit work for this course. (Click on "create account" just benath the Login box at the top of the screen, if you need to create an account.)

The course ID is 3414451, and the password is "min3sources" (a reminder of the fact that a good news story needs a minimum of three sources -- typically, one source on one side of a controversy, one on the other side of a controversy, and one from an authority who is not involved in the dispute).
  • Part A: Personal Goals Statement. What do you want to get out of your education, and how can EL200 (and working on The Setonian) help you to reach those goals?  Be specific -- "I can conduct a reader survey to learn about The Setonian's readership" is specific, while "I can work to improve The Setonian" is vague. Be clear, but be realistic, too. (See the goals statement as described in part A of EL200 Journalism Basics.doc for full details; 300 words; 50%)

  • Part B: Instead of the Part B that the first-timers do, I'm asking editors to write Setonian Layout Instructions (screen caps and instructions, on a topic that we agree on in advance. See me.)
Upload both parts in a single file, to the proper slot in Turnitin.com.

The course ID is 3414451, and the password is "min3sources" (a reminder of the fact that a good news story needs a minimum of three sources -- typically, one source on one side of a controversy, one on the other side of a controversy, and one from an authority who is not involved in the dispute).
Due by 12:30pm.

First-timers Only (if you have not taken EL200 before): Read Haiman 1-16, and post a 200-word reflection in a comment on this page. (You may want to draft your comment in a word processor first, just in case you have trouble posting it on this page.)

Setonian Editors Only: Skim Haiman 1-16; read Coffey iii-21; and post an entry on your own blog about how Coffey illustrates an issue Haiman covers; post a brief comment and link here.

Note:

  • If you have not taken EL200 before, you will always read and reflect about Haiman.
  • If you are a Setonian editor, you will skim Haiman, but read and write about how Coffey illuminates an issue Haiman covers.
