Course Overview
Welcome to EL 227, "News Writing."
The course website is located at http://jerz.setonhill.edu/EL227. I will update the online syllabus periodically, adding chapters in our textbooks or links to reporting on current events, as our progress in the course dictates. The printout I give on the first day of classes is only part of the information available online.
- Introductions
- What is news?
- What is a journalist?
- Online syllabus and blogging overview.
- What's due for Wednesday, Aug 26?
- Time permitting: the CRAFT of journalism.
- We'll end with career advice from the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism. It applies to anyone who wants to work with words.
The best foundation begins with an undergraduate liberal arts education that exposes you to a wide range of disciplines of study and helps you supplement your native curiosity with a habit of critical thinking. Whatever course of study you follow, be sure to include a strong foundation in ethics... And, throughout all this, read. Read everything you can, including classics in fiction that can help you begin to understand human nature and the human condition. -- Bill Kovach
