where are we supposed to get these pictures from?
also, these instructions are for a MAC?
can I pull them from the internet?
Page xiii gives the URL for the book's companion site, where you can download these exact photos, if you wish. http://www.cookwood.com/htmlvqj/examples/
Yes, the photo-editing instructions are for a Mac, but any photo editor will have basically the same options.
You can use any pictures, and if you like you can change the text so that your site is more interesting to you. Use fan-produced art to create a spoof Hogwarts admissions page? That would be fine by me. You don't need to reproduce the examples precisely, so long as your version demonstrates all the technical details that the original example introduces.
Since you will be posting copies of those photos you should use photos you've got permission to use -- your own photos is a possibility, or any photos published with a Creative Commons license that gives you permission to republish them if you give credit to the photographer (and make sure you do that). You can find CC licensed images at
http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/
I don't really care about the quality of the photos. You or a friend can just snap some photos with a camera phone if you're desperate.
Did that help?
yeah..is it okay that I don't have a photo editor?
Yes. You probably do have an editor of some sort on your machine -- try right-clicking a photo and seeing what your system suggst for "Open with..."
You can also download The Gimp, which is a free, full-featured open source photo-editor (similar to Photoshop).
http://www.gimp.org/
But the NMJ program requires "Digital Photography," so you'll get all that when you take that class.

by the way, anybody know anything about "Photo Perfect"? I downloaded it because my old photoshopping tool got wiped out in the great hardrive crash of spring 2008.

Dr. Jerz, I am trying to make things work on this Castro activity but I'm having a lot of trouble. I got to page 20 but most of the previous instructions have not gone so well so I think I need to clean them up with some help from you on monday, before I move on again by myself. Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated!
As I write in my blog, my mac is not co-operating with me this evening. I'm going to try to do the exercises before class tomorrow. Good news though, I understood it all; I just can't do it.
I fail it.

We'll spend some time in class going over reactions to these exercises. I hope you'll put your heads together with classmates, and/or make plans to see me in my office for one-on-one help.
As I said in class on the first day, computers are stupid and unforgiving. If you make a tiny mistake that a human being would be able to ignore -- forgetting a close quotation mark is a favorite problem -- that can mess up every stage that comes after the mistake, Already, many of you have begun developing strategies for approaching this kind of detail-oriented work. I don't plan to throw more and more HTML at you week after week -- once we learn the basics we'll turn our focus to *writing*.
I should have listened to the syllabus, Dr. Jerz. It would have saved me a lot of headaches today, as explained here. http://blogs.setonhill.edu/JedidiahFetterman/2008/09/thank_you_network.html
