  • I had already planned to demonstrate that you can sing Emily Dickinson poetry to the tune of "The Yellow Rose of Texas" before the Jerz/Spears thing came up. I did the same thing last year. However, when I was a second-semester college freshman, I starred in a production of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," where I did sing and dance.

    I'm not nearly as accomplished a performer as Ms. Spears, though I'm happy to say that my first -- and, I hope, only -- marriage is working out much better than hers did.

    If today's episode of bursting into spontaneous song in class today was an attempt to prove that you can sing better than Britney Spears, all I can say is, well, hit me, jerz-y, one more time? um... hey! let's get Britney here on campus and have a showdown! Can you dance too? ;c)

  • I think it's also fair to note that my students know that "Jerz" is my wife's pet name for me, and I often refer to myself as "Jerz" when I say, for instance, "I don't want you to say to yourself, 'What does Jerz think I should get out of this reading?'", so I was just amused by it. As I've said before, it's probably a good sign that students find me so approachable.

  • I twitched when I first saw that blog entry, and thought the students were being rather rude. Obviously, I can see how it's intended in a good fun, but unless you know Dr. Jerz or the students in the class personally, I think it comes across as something akin to a mocking stick figure drawing of "TEACHER" on the blackboard.
