McCain: Dictators ‘get started by suppressing free press’

“If you want to preserve democracy as we know it, you have to have a free and many times adversarial press… And without it, I am afraid that we would lose so much of our individual liberties over time. That’s how dictators get started.” — Republican Senator John McCain, in a Feb 2017 interview on CNN

  • I grew up under the rule of military dictatorship. The press was under their control and those who raised their voices disappeared. Soldiers were in full dress everywhere. Those who were picked up by meat wagons after the 9:00 pm curfew you would disappear. If they were seen again, they were not the same. I was fortunate to have escaped the nightmare. I hope it does not happen in the U.S.
