'Superman' torch is passed

Singer says he plans to use the late Marlon Brando in the new film. Brando, who played Superman’s father, Jor-El, in the 1978 Superman and died in 2004, will return in the same role.

Singer says he found stock footage of Brando shot by director Richard Donner in 1978, which will provide Brando’s voice. Special-effects crews will digitally re-create Brando’s image, Singer says. —‘Superman’ torch is passed (Yahoo!)

  • In another interview, Dana Reeve was quoted as saying, "He looks just like Chris" about Brandon Routh when she saw him wearing the Superman costume.

The Complete Superman Collection on DVD contained a documentary saying how Brando's image in the Fortress of Solitude proved to be one of the most difficult special effects shots filmed for Superman: The Movie. It required filming Brando reading his lines against a black velvet background for superimposition, visual effects filmed separately, and an optical printer to combine them into the scene when we first see Christopher Reeve as Superman.
