Um... aren't theses set by word count? Also, sans serif typeface should be avoided; they look nice and tidy but after centuries of joined letters in hand script and use in print the eye follows the flow better. This applies to a curved tail. Kudos for the instincts of serif fanatics!
Have you had any of them increase the font size of periods to expand the number of pages? Less obvious than extra wide margins. But a clear act of academic dishonestly as opposed to being boneheaded with the margins.
Adjust the kearning instead.
