Dear Sen. Clinton:
I’m writing to commend you for calling for a $90-million study on the effects of video games on children, and in particular the courageous stand you have taken in recent weeks against the notorious “Grand Theft Auto” series.
I’d like to draw your attention to another game whose nonstop violence and hostility has captured the attention of millions of kids
— a game that instills aggressive thoughts in the minds of its players, some of whom have gone on to commit real-world acts of violence and sexual assault after playing.I’m talking, of course, about high school football. —Steven Johnson —Hillary vs. the Xbox: Game over (LA Times (will expire))

Lou, I think part of his point is that it’s as ridiculous to issue a blanket condemnation of videogames as it is to condemn all of football for the same reason.

Dear Mr. Johnson:
I am writing you to commend you for pointing out ALL of high school football as a violent game. Thank you very much. Thank you for also pointing out that is not JUST football that causes this “violence and sexual assault after playing.”
Thank you for not coming to a small town in Pennsylvania called Greensburg. We have three high schools in our small little hamlet. Greensburg-Salem, home of the Golden Lions, Greensburg Central Catholic, home of the Centurions, and Hempfield, home of the weas..I’m sorry, I mean Spartans.
Thank you for NOT pointing out that it is also Hockey that induces these “aggressive thoughts in minds of its players”.
Louis Gagliardi.
In case you couldn’t tell I was being saracstic. GS, GCC, and HA, actually aren’t that violent…ok..well..not all the time..GS and HA get violent–at one another. What can I say, it’s an intense rivalry. But I have NEVER heard of sexual assult happening here in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
I am sorry, but when he mentions high school football, and mentions nonstop violence..I can’t help but laugh at ALL the people who seem to think ALL HS’s are like that. Maybe in the big city where gang violence is already prominent, but what about the small towns and cities–like Greensburg? You can’t truely say that its happened–coaches like Kemerer and Cavanaugh, and even the legends of GS and HA, NEVER let that happen.
I’m sorry for ranting Dr. Jerz, but after reading that article, it kind of got me mad.
