Thanks, Anonymous… it was a while ago that I encountered this problem. When I updated my anti-virus software, that solved the problem.
Open this file with Notepad:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Clear out the information, save, and you should be all good to go.

Will, I had shut it off because it sometimes messes up the formatting of pages on my oldest computer, my desktop at home. That’s Webwasher, which I swore by for years, but which doesn’t do such a good job blocking ads anymore. For my office computer and my laptop, I use “No Flash”, which doesn’t block quite as many ads, but which 1) blocks more of the most annoying ones and 2) doesn’t mess up the page formtting in the process.
Wait a minute…I thought you had a pop-blocker on your computer?
Most definitely a virus. You can find out more by entering |google hijacking| into Google. (Well, or another search engine if you can’t access it.)
I’m using my office computer now, and of course have no problem. I couldn’t Google for “google ‘no website configured at this address’” when I couldn’t access Google, but as you can see, this problem isn’t new — it’s the virus QHosts-1.
I was reading a movie review on ScreenIt.com, when I closed one of the many #*%#$* pop-ups on that site. Another window popped up immediately in the space where I wanted to click, so I clicked something invisible in a window that immediately closed. I guessed I was in trouble, and updated my virus software immediately, but I guess I was too late.
Of course, I can’t be sure that it was a pop-up on ScreenIt.com that infected me — but tonight the number and obnoxiousness of the pop-ups was just too much. I’m not reading movie reviews on that site anymore.
That’s very odd, but I have had no problems with Google this morning. I don’t think I could ever learn to live without it, so it’s a good thing it’s still there :-)
